Simple Ideas for Styling Faux Florals & Botanicals at Home

Florals and stems have a way of making a room feel a little more alive. They add colour, texture, movement and softness, and can fill that spot on a table or shelf that you just know needs something.
Of course, keeping fresh flowers all year round in multiple spaces isn't always practical. This is where we love mixing in faux.
Current faux botanicals have come a long way, with beautiful colours, interesting textures and stems that can be used over and over again. They also give you the freedom to play. Move them to another room, switch a few stems with the seasons, create something big and dramatic, or keep it simple with a single branch in a favourite vase.
Let’s chat simple ideas for adding in lifelike botanicals.
Start With the Vase

Sometimes we choose the flowers first. Other times, it's the vase that starts the whole idea.
A beautiful vase can completely change how an arrangement feels, so look beyond the standard clear flower vase. Ceramic vases, pitchers, baskets and interesting vintage pieces can all become a starting point for an arrangement.
Think about the relationship between the two. A tall vessel can handle long, dramatic branches, while a smaller vase may only need a few simple stems. An oversized vase filled with tiny flowers may feel a little lost, while too many large stems in a petite vessel can quickly overwhelm it.
The vase is part of the arrangement, not just the thing holding it, so choose something you love enough to leave out even when it's empty.
Don't Make It Too Perfect

Nature isn't perfectly symmetrical, and your faux florals don't need to be either.
One of the easiest ways to make artificial flowers feel more natural is to give them a little room. Gently bend and separate the stems so they aren't all sitting at exactly the same height or facing the same direction. Some can fall slightly to one side while others add height.
You can also bend longer stems rather than cutting them if your vase isn't transparent. This lets you adjust the height now and straighten them again later when you want to use them in a different arrangement. We like an arrangement with a little personality. Perfect doesn't always mean more beautiful!
Try One Beautiful Stem

Not every flower arrangement needs to be a bouquet. Sometimes a single branch or botanical stem in a beautiful vessel is enough, especially on a smaller table, bathroom vanity, nightstand or shelf. It's simple, but it can add height and shape to an area without making the surface feel busy.
This works particularly well with larger leafy branches, flowering branches or stems with an interesting shape. Let the botanical itself become part of the decor.
If you have a few stems from a larger arrangement, try separating one out and using it somewhere unexpected. It's an easy way to carry a little greenery or colour into another part of your home.
Go Bigger Where You Have the Space

On the other hand, sometimes more really is more! Large kitchen islands, dining tables, entryway consoles and rooms with higher ceilings can handle a little drama. An oversized vase filled with tall branches or generous greenery draws your eye upward and can give the entire room a focal point.
Scale matters here. A tiny arrangement can disappear on a long dining table or large island, while taller botanicals help fill the space without adding a lot of little decorative objects.
And bigger doesn't necessarily mean using dozens of flowers. A handful of long branches can make just as much impact as a full floral arrangement.
Mix Different Shapes and Textures

If you're creating a fuller bouquet, don't feel like every stem has to match.
Combining different shapes, textures and heights can give an arrangement more depth. Try softer blooms alongside leafy greenery, or pair fuller flowers with something a little more wispy and wild.
You can also mix faux and fresh botanicals. A few clippings from the yard tucked in with artificial flowers can change the whole arrangement, and faux greenery is an easy way to make a small bunch of fresh flowers feel fuller.
The same idea works when you're using botanicals in different places around a room. If you have a full floral arrangement on your coffee table, try something taller and branchier on a nearby console rather than repeating the exact same look.
Let Your Botanicals Change With the Seasons

One of our favourite things about faux flowers is how easy they are to reinvent throughout the year. You don't need four completely different collections of botanicals. Start with a few stems or greenery you love, then change what surrounds them as the seasons shift.
Spring might bring softer flowers and fresh greens. Summer can feel a little lighter and looser. In fall, add richer colours, branches, berries or foliage. When Christmas arrives, evergreens and winter botanicals can take their place.
Sometimes changing only a couple of stems is enough to make an arrangement feel new again. When you're ready for another change, store the pieces carefully and bring them back out next year. Good faux botanicals can become part of your decor for many seasons.
Use Botanicals in More Than the Living Room

It's easy to picture flowers on a coffee or dining table, but we love botanicals in the quieter corners of a home too. Try a small arrangement on a bathroom counter, greenery on a bedside table or a tall branch in an entryway. A kitchen counter can be softened with a simple vase of stems, while a basket filled with greenery can add texture to an empty corner.
Even bookshelves can benefit from a little something organic among all those straight lines. A trailing botanical or small arrangement breaks things up and adds softness. These don't have to be big decorating moments. Often it's the smaller details throughout a home that make it feel cozy and finished.
Move Things Around and Play
Perhaps our favourite piece of advice when it comes to artificial flowers decoration ideas is not to take them too seriously. If an arrangement doesn't look quite right, pull out a stem. Add another. Bend something to the side. Try a different vase. Move the whole thing across the room and see how it looks there. We do this all the time when we're styling.
Decorating isn't something you have to get right on the first try. Sometimes you need to walk away, come back with fresh eyes and realize that the arrangement needs a little more height or that the vase would look much better somewhere else.
Your home should feel collected and personal, and that usually happens gradually as you play with the things you love.
